The Guyana Power & Light Inc.(GPL) has issued a press release about the power outage that affected large swaths of the Berbice-Demerara service areas.

The press release stated that GPL discovered two damaged conductors and connectors on the 69 kV Transmission Line 3 at the Garden of Eden (GoE) Power plant that resulted in an overload of two Wartsila engines at GoE. This triggered the loss of another two engines at the same location, followed by six other engines at the Kingston Power Plant and the eventual collapse of the Berbice-Demerara Interconnected System.

Sources indicate that possible reasons for the damaged conductor and connector may be either a loose connection or corrosion due to age.
