Chinese Company to build $35M wireless system in Guyana

Bharrat Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo announced on Monday that a Chinese company will build a $35 million wireless system that is expected to speed government services and provide Internet connections in rural regions.

Mr. Jagdeo says Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co. will commence with connecting hospitals, police stations, military outposts and other facilities early next year.

Huawei Technologies has partnered with local companies on this project and is part of a larger government plan to improve Internet access in the Guyana.

Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Co. (GT&T) already recently launched a high-speed Internet service after a $60 million fiber-optic cable network that runs from Suriname to Guyana was installed in January.
