WFC (Women For Change) condemns attack on female reporters - AFC Press Release

Alliance for Change

Women For Change (WFC) the women's arm of the Alliance For Change is calling on the head of  the Guyana Forestry Commission to distance himself and the Commission from threatening statements made by Philip Bynoe at the GFC press conference on August 18th.

WFC finds the comments made by Mr. Bynoe and his aggressive manner sinister.

Not only has Mr. Bynoe threatened members of the Press but his aggression was directed towards two young women in particular. This is totally unacceptable.

In any society where freedom of the press is guaranteed, such behaviour at a Press Conference would not have been permitted. It was the responsibility of the GFC to ensure a safe and conducive environment for reporters to ask questions. The GFC failed in this regard and furthermore placed the well-being of the two female reporters at risk.

The direct attack and threats towards the independent Kaieteur News and Stabroek News could only be viewed as an attempt to stifle Press Freedom.

WFC staunchly supports freedom of the Press and the right of reporters to practice their craft without fear and condemns any attempt to intimidate members of the Media or any Media House.
