Planned Worldwide Protest Outside Venezuelan Embassies and Consulates

Worldwide Protest Outside Venezuelan Embassies and Counsulates

On October 3, 2015, all Guyanese, Guyanese organizations and friends of Guyana are asked to support the Government of Guyana in defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Guyana.

We must stage picketing events outside all Venezuelan Embassies and Consulates worldwide to mark the 116th anniversary of the 1899 Award, a valid treaty which set the borders between Guyana and Venezuela

See attached flyer and stay tuned to Guyana Graphic and your local organizations for updates.

It is vital that we all play a role in rebuffing any claims to our land and bring to the attention of the world the need for a resolution to Venezuela's baseless claims of Guyanese territory.

Background

Venezuela has recently returned to its policy of hostility and aggression against Guyana over their baseless claim to our territory and resources.

Last May 26th, following the discovery of oil off the coast of Demerara, President Nicolas Maduro issued a decree annexing Guyana's maritime economic zone.

Last week Mr. Maduro suspended a request from Guyana for our Ambassador, Mrs. Cheryl Miles, to be accredited to Venezuela. In addition, they have violated our territorial integrity by dispatching troops and armed gunboats into the Cuyuni River and are threatening the use of force by deploying missiles near the border.

Guyana has done nothing to provoke these attacks. We have simply called for the issue to be decided by the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court.

PRESIDENT David Granger has said that Guyana will be moving to the courts to have the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy resolved once and for all.

Speaking ahead of his first presentation to the United Nations General Assembly next week, the President said: “Our message will be that we have to resolve this matter by juridical means. We will be going to court, we are not interested any longer in any sterile good officer process. We are going to go to court and settle this matter. It is affecting our development too long, 50 years is too long.”

As a result the Government of Guyana has embarked on a lobbying effort to have the idea accepted that the matter must be taken to the World Court.

The matter has now reached a stage where Guyanese at home and overseas must speak out as one in defense of our sovereignty and territorial integrity and in support of our Government's position.
