In the minutes from a "Secret" meeting of the Committee of Imperial Defense of the British Government titled “Policy Regarding Oil Concessions in British Territory” on 29 September 1930, it was stated that “while in British Guiana the discovery of oil indications in a boring for water has led to a demand on the part of local estate proprietors to lease their oil rights to United States interests.

Background:
His Excellency Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Guyana, formerly British Guiana, in December 1964. Following a change in the National Constitution in 1980, he was designated Executive President and Head of State.

Stan Brock, was my number one hero when I was a teenager and I’m sorry I never met him. When I first heard of him British Guiana was now Guyana and he was the long gone ex-manager of one of the most remote and largest cattle ranches in the world. During his time as a cowboy in the Amazon 4,000 of British Guiana’s 83,000 sq. miles were Dadanawa cattle range.

Vernon "Lou" Hlubek, a Navy veteran who hunted enemy submarines from blimps and served on a military operation in Antarctica, died Sunday of complications from a recent fall, his family said. He was 89. Mr. Hlubek (pronounced lu-bek) was a Midwestern farm boy who joined the Navy in 1942 and traveled around the world.

My Aunt Esther was a black working-class Londoner, born before World War 1. Her life spanned almost the entire century (1912 to 1994).

Her father, Joseph Bruce, settled in Fulham, west London, during the Edwardian era when very few black people lived in Britain. He came here from British Guiana (now Guyana) a colony in South America. He was a proud, independent man.

While several other cities were embroiled in bitter racial conflagrations, Miami Beach, Florida, host city for the 15th Miss Universe beauty pageant, made the 1966 contest a model for good relations among the 59 white contestants. For the first time, all the girls were housed without regard to race or country. Neither did all nonwhite contestants get a special hostess as before.

Eighteen-year old Jean Harris yesterday became Guyana's first road fatality for 1967, when she was killed in an accident on the East Bank Public Road.

Injured in the crash, which occured shortly after 6 o'clock, were Daisy Harris, 40, William Harris, Pamela Harris, 15, and Trevor Wharton, 2, all of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme.
