The gods were smiling yesterday as the first, and hopefully annual, Guyanese Kite Flying Picnic event got underway at the Centennial Park in Columbia, Maryland. The picnic saw hundreds of people over the course of several hours flying kites, eating good food and just enjoying a beautiful day.

With splendid sunshine and North-Easterly breeze of about 5 mph Guyanese came out to the seawall and other venues for the annual ritual of Kite Flying.

The girls in the latest fashions, the boys spending more time helping the fashionable girls than flying kites, the kids demanding their parents attention to get their kites in the sky and their parents only too willing for a break to enjoy the the various beverages of the day.

My Aunt Esther was a black working-class Londoner, born before World War 1. Her life spanned almost the entire century (1912 to 1994).

Her father, Joseph Bruce, settled in Fulham, west London, during the Edwardian era when very few black people lived in Britain. He came here from British Guiana (now Guyana) a colony in South America. He was a proud, independent man.

While several other cities were embroiled in bitter racial conflagrations, Miami Beach, Florida, host city for the 15th Miss Universe beauty pageant, made the 1966 contest a model for good relations among the 59 white contestants. For the first time, all the girls were housed without regard to race or country. Neither did all nonwhite contestants get a special hostess as before.

Participants are provided opportunities to strengthen their personal leadership skills and enhance their understanding of international relations. This program is designed to promote mutual understanding, respect, and friendship with the goal of cultivating long-lasting relationships among young people who are poised to become tomorrow's global leaders and policy makers.

Fulbright NEXUS Regional Scholar Program

Who's Eligible
Successful candidates will include rising scholars or practitioners active in the academic, public or private sectors that demonstrate outstanding qualifications and a record of experience and accomplishment in an area clearly related to one of the designated research themes. Applicants must be conducting current research relevant to the program's themes and objectives, be open to exploring and incorporating comparative, interdisciplinary approaches in their investigations, and interested in developing collaborative activities with other Fulbright NEXUS Scholars.
