US calls on Guyana to revoke radio frequencies issued to people connected to ruling party
GEORGETOWN, Guyana — The U.S. government has joined a growing list of international agencies calling on authorities in Guyana to immediately revoke radio frequencies issued to those closely connected to the South American country’s ruling party.
Last month, legislators forced Prime Minister Samuel Hinds to release the list of those allocated frequencies in 2011. It showed the governing party gave itself five frequencies, five to the sister of Cabinet Minister Robert Persaud and five to the best friend of former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
New Peace Corps Volunteers Arrive in Country
GEORGETOWN – Thirty Peace Corps trainees arrived in Georgetown yesterday to complement their 35 colleagues already in service. The new trainees make up the 25th group of Peace Corps Volunteers to serve in Guyana, and they will soon begin their pre-service training.
The Rescinding of the Oliver Tambo Award to Forbes Burnham - By Dr. Kean Gibson
I am a Guyanese who has lived and worked in the Caribbean – Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados - and I was very surprised by Professor Horace Campbell’s request for the Oliver Tambor award not to be given to Forbes Burnham because the latter allegedly assassinated Walter Rodney. It appears that the South African government has given credence to this allegation and the award was not given.

The prestigious award is given to foreign citizens who have promoted South African interests and aspirations through co-operation, solidarity, and support.
