Background:
His Excellency Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Guyana, formerly British Guiana, in December 1964. Following a change in the National Constitution in 1980, he was designated Executive President and Head of State.

The Government of South Africa has "defered" posthumous awarding President Forbes Burnham the O R Tambo Award, indefinitely

The late President Forbes Burnham will be honored by the South African government with the Oliver Tambo Award.

The Order of the Companions of O. R. Tambo is a South African honor was established on December 6, 2002, and is granted by the president of South Africa, to foreign citizens who have promoted South African interests and aspirations through co-operation, solidarity, and support. The order has three classes:

As everyone is aware, Nigel suffered a heart attack on Saturday March 16 while on a visit to Marudi in the remote Rupununi. On Sunday morning he was airlifted to Georgetown and was admitted to the Caribbean Heart Institute of the Georgetown Hospital, where he remains a patient. He is responding satisfactorily to the excellent medical attention he is receiving.
