GTUC Notes Announcement of Elections….Prorogation Not Lifted - Press Statement

The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) notes the announcement of National and Regional Elections (N&RE), even as the electorate for 17 years has been denied the right to elect their local leaders through local government elections. That notwithstanding, the N&RE will give the electorate an opportunity to exercise their franchise which they have been doing since 1947.

In an address to the nation this evening President Donald Ramotar announced that General and Regional Elections will be held on Monday, May 11, 2015.

President Ramotar said that GECOM advised that they will be ready for elections on the date set.

Members of the AFC protested in front of the Embassy of the United States today. They were asking the embassy to suspend the visas of all ministers of the government of Guyana until parliament is restored or a date of general elections is announced.
