Severe flooding hits Guyana after heavy rains

Heavy rains have flooded thousands of homes in the Georgetown and the outlying areas forcing the closure of schools earlier today.

More than 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain fell in less than 24 hours, and more rain was predicted for the coming days, meteorologists said.

Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Upcoming Demonstrations in Georgetown - United States Embassy Georgetown, Guyana

Dear U.S. Citizen,

The United States Embassy in Georgetown informs all U.S. citizens that demonstrations are expected to take place tomorrow Friday November 14, 2014 at 1700hrs at the Square of the Revolution, located on Vlissengen Road between Homestead Avenue and Hadfield Street in Georgetown.  This demonstration, coordinated by the opposition, is in response to Monday’s announcement by the President of Guyana to prorogate parliament. In light of the current political climate, there may be additional demonstrations between now and the foreseeable future. U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

As we commemorate the 38th Anniversary of the October 06, 1976 terrorist attack on Cubana Airline Flight 455 flying from Bridgetown Barbados to Havana Cuba, we must pause to reflect on the lives of the murdered innocent 73 passengers and crew.

Umana Yana (Benab) Gutted by Fire of Unknown Origin

Earlier today the Benab (officially called the Umana Yana) one of Guyana’s historic buildings was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin.  

The Umana Yana whose name is derived from a Wai-Wai word meaning Meeting Place of the People, was built August 1972 as one of the venues for the Non-Aligned Foreign Ministers Conference held in Georgetown, Guyana that same year. It is located at the northernmost end of Main Street just south of The Pegasus Hotel and is used as a conference and exhibition center.

Associated Press - Authorities in the South American country of Guyana have discovered a rudimentary submarine they believe was going to be used to ferry drugs across the Atlantic, police said Friday.
