PHILADELPHIA — U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists recently intercepted Khapra Beetle, one of the world’s most destructive insect pets, in a passenger’s baggage at Philadelphia International Airport.

This year sees the 250th anniversary of the end of the Berbice Revolt. By October 1763, much of this river (see photo) was under the control of the slaves. The Dutch garrison was overwhelmed with disease, and - just for a moment - it had looked as if one of the greatest revolts in slavery's history might just succeed.

The recent security breaches at the White House in Washington DC have many questioning the Secret Service and in particular the reaction of the Service to the person who jumped the fence.

The Secret Service has a very difficult and complex job to do, but let us isolate their role at the White House which among many others is to protect the President and the infrastructure.

Many of us have been concerned about the criminalization of protest in Guyana, in particular African Guyanese protest. We have pointed to the difference in the responses of the government and some sections of Civil Society to protest in the two ethnic communities.

The first locally acquired case of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease, was reported July 17 in Florida. This newly reported case represents the first time that mosquitoes in the continental United States are thought to have spread the virus to a non-traveler. Although CDC does not expect widespread cases of chikungunya in the United States this summer, American travelers infected overseas may continue to return and bring the virus with them.
